How to Start a Fellowship: Step #1 – by Matthew Hall

A Leap of Faith: Do you remember the part in the Indiana Jones movie “The Last Crusade” where Indiana repeated his father’s words to himself, “Only in the leap from the lion’s head will he prove his worth” as he was about to step out onto the invisible bridge? Well, sometimes it takes a lot of trust and faith in YeHoVaH to actually step up to the plate and take a swing at the destiny that He has for us.

The first step in starting a fellowship is actually mustering up enough confidence, faith, and belief that you are a winner and you can accomplish all things through the Messiah (Philippians 4:13). I have heard from many of you who were considering starting a new fellowship that you just didn’t feel qualified. Some of the most common phrases have been:

“I was thinking of starting a fellowship but I don’t have a theological degree or anything like that!”

“There is not fellowship in my area and I was thinking of starting one but I’m not a scholar and don’t even know where to start.”

“I was wondering How to Start a Fellowship: I’m a little nervous because I do not have any formal training.”

Although modern day churches, denominations, and clergy would require you to go through some sort of certification class or training seminar before starting a home group or planting a church, Yeshua made it clear that what he is looking for is a clean vessel and a willing and humble heart. Matthew 28:19 states, “Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations…!” Yeshua also goes on to say, “Truly, truly, I say to you, he who believes in Me, the works that I do, he will do also; and greater works than these he will do; because I go to the Father.”

According to Yeshua, a resume, college transcript, or training certification is not required to work for him, however, a clean vessel and a willing and humble heart that acknowledges that He is Messiah and that He goes to the Father for us to accomplish his will on earth through us is what qualifies you. Take a moment and re-examine your qualifications and know that if you “Leap from the Lion’s head” he will make a path for you even in the most impossible circumstance.

    Hi Matthew
We have a fellowship here on Iowa City at the Notsrim Messianic Student Center.

We have been meeting for over a year on shabbat. Now we have our own space!

I had us listed as an aviv fellowship but under another name.

My name is Jacob Rigal. I have a number of teaching videos on YouTube if you are interested. Just put my name in

I want to get more connected with the Rood crew etc.

Are there any teaching materials from Rood Awakening that could be made available to us?

    Stay in touch. In Yeshua

    Jacob

    Hi Matthew,

I have been advertising weekly in the local newspaper for close to five months now.

Using different phrases and so far I have made one contact.

It feels that nobody is interested, or perhaps I am not called.

    Any advise?

    Best Wishes,
    Carl.

Just stay the course and continue learning and growing. The Father will orchestrate divine encounters. Keep up the good work.

Have bought quite a few DVD’s and have a fellowship on Sabbath afternoon’s, sharing the messages I have and also go onto your computer messages.
My group have all bought the Chronological Gospels which we have and are busy reading.
I also do Prison Ministry. Thank you to Michael for doing his study in getting the right information from the Torah and his other investigation on the time of Yeshua and His teaching, so need to know the truth.

    Regards

I really like what I hear from Mr. Rood, I want to know more about this Aviv fellowship and everything you think I should learn.
    Thank you
    Jesus Lorenzo.

My wife and I started guarding shabbat’s almost 5 years ago, with much learning from various teachers, including “A Rood Awakening” and we are now inviting people to our home for erev shabbat’s since, almost a year ago. From time to time we also meet at other people’s homes for their version of erev shabbat, blessing their homes etc. Our home group is growing, from my wife and I only, to as many as 15 are joining us on a regurlar to somewhat regular basis.

Yehovah has blessed our home, with many who are on the fringes of society. They too are feeling a spiritual tug to look into this whole Torah and living Torah thing. We are learning of the Lost Tribes of Israel through many sources and authors of who ancient Israel is today and where they have gone, Jowett, Steven M. Colins etc. The Biblical blessings of Avraham are alive and well and Judah is asking what are these people who associate with Yoseph doing, studying Torah, wearing tzit tzit’s and following the instructions of Yehovah, with Messiah at the center.

We enjoy shabbat night live and Nehemia Gordon’s input and teachings. Getting us back to the original Hebrew is so very important. Though my dad taught Koine Greek and even wrote a Greek Lexicon and other books, he told us to go to the original language for the truth, which we know is Hebrew, not Koine Greek. It still amazes me that so many who are “grafted in” are also actual children of Israel in a very real DNA way. Stay the course!

Thank you for the encouraging words Matthew, I have been hesitant to start a AVIV fellowship because of my sinful past. Through faith I will follow through and put all my efforts to follow the Messiah’s direction to spread the gospel to all. I have been filled with doubt that I will not be accepted because if my past but it is the Messiah that must be accepted not me. With your words it is apparent that I have been missing the most important details mentioned before. May YeHoVaH bless you beyond measure Matthew. Gary

Hi Gary. I’m so glad that you were encouraged. I think at the end of the day, none of us are qualified without Yeshua. Thank the Father that we now have unparalleled qualification through Yesuha. Blessings.

You also need to be Yeshua centered. If you are prone to every “new” teaching that comes down the pike then you are in for a lot of heartache and headaches.

We have our very being in Yeshua and Yeshua alone. We were all sinners and deserved the wrath of Elohim but through Yeshua we have been saved from that wrath. We have our righteousness in Yeshua alone. Unless we are His and have his spirit and are led by His spirit we are wasting our time we are yet in our sins.

We are adopted sons grafted into the root that is Yeshua, not Israel, because the branches of Judah and Israel were also cut off and have to be grafted back in through Yeshua. No man can come to the Father except through him. We are all together a new creation.

But Matthew you are right. Sometimes we need to step out of our comfort zone and just do the work. I did back in 1996 (seems like ages and just yesterday). There have been many blessings and many heartaches and except for my wife of 42 years by my side to spur me on when I was at the throwing up my hands and saying “why am I beating my head against the wall” stages I would have thrown in the towel a few years back but over all it has been a blessing and I’m glad we are working to bring to bring about the “equipping of the saints for the work of ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ, 13 till we all come to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a perfect man, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ; (Eph 4:12-13)

Some ministers forget that quote it it becomes a “keep my people” ministry, which is why I think the messianic movement has so many problems doctrinally as, ” in what do my people want to hear instead of what do they need to hear”, however that should not be our focus. Our focus should be to teach others to be ministers of their own. If they go and start a new church closer to where they live then we have done our job.

  8. January 12, 2017

    Shalom Matthew,

My name is James D Stoneburgh and I’m currently an Aviv Fellowship Leader in Guelph, Ontario, Canada (Guelph Aviv Fellowship). I believe that I was one of the initial respondents when Guardians of the Aviv first came out. Our Fellowship was even mentioned by name on the second installment of the ‘Rock and Roll Bible Show’. When Michael appealed to Aviv Fellowships to order the R&R Bible Show Box Set last year, he noted that only 11 had been ordered to date. I had two of those orders, and that’s when it dawned on me that all Fellowships were not the same. Since then, I have investigated some of the Fellowships that exist close to me here in Ontario, Canada, and found that there are a lot of wolves posing as sheep in order to find the ‘sheep pens of Tekoa’.

I have been privileged to talk to you on more than one occasion, but I would doubt that you would remember me. I also responded to your call to write a letter of recommendation for Scott Laird in order for him to receive a special VISA to live and work in the USA, which I did, and Scott seemed very impressed with my efforts, which he corresponded to me after he received that very special VISA, one which was not normally issued. I am only saying this to illustrate that I have been an ‘all in’ supporter of the Rood Crew for about five years now, although my limited support might be closer to that of the ‘Widows mite’.

I’m a bit older than Michael, but not by that much, so we have done many things in life concurrently,…, the military, trying to get to Viet Nam (but thankfully not making it, I believe that Yahovah did not wish us to be like David, whose hands had shed much blood, but more like his son Solomon), traveling the Middle East, living in Israel…but there are also quite a few differences, particularly with regards to heritage and Michael’s lengthy commitment to our Elohim.

And like Michael, and for that matter, ALL committed Netzerim in these, the Last Days, I believe that we should be ‘all in’ in our support of your ministry. I have always maintained that you speak the TRUTH and you speak it fluently. Whatever I have (which is not really that much these days), I have committed to the support of your ministry. As our Creator gives me provision, I in turn, pass that provision on to you. It’s all or nothing time now, because no one will be taking anything with them when they’re called before the Judgement Seat, except those good deeds that they do while they are able.

And like Michael, I too, have been sorely sifted like wheat as of late, just getting out of hospital from a life threatening illness. Thankfully in Canada, almost all of my medical costs were covered by our Government, and the bit left over was picked up by Veterans Affairs, so I had no need to burden anyone, and for that, I am truly thankful. In a way, I felt much like Job when the adversary was allowed to sift him like wheat. And like Job, hasatan was told exactly how far he could go, but that he was not allowed to take my life, for it was mine for a prey. But, that’s as close to dying as I think that anyone could come, and I’ve been in some pretty tight corners before. But, it was Yahovah who spared me, and Y’shua who has healed me, so to our Elohim I give my most humble thanks.

I write to you today on a related matter. As is my custom, I save enough each month (I am on my own, financially surviving no a severely limited Disability Program) to provide a monthly love gift of at least $50.00 US (which is a lot more in Canadian funds). Some months I can squeak out a bit extra, which I also pass on to you. However, today when I tried to order this months love gift, your polite operator could not find me anywhere in the system. I also tried to order additional material as this month, I had been able to save a bit extra (the only good thing to come out of my extended hospital stay.)

To conclude quickly, I was unable to order any of the additional material, and the entire experience was unlike anything that I’ve ever experienced at ARoodAwakening. I was greatly disappointed at not being able to access any of your specials, as I need to replace many of the items that I lend out in outreach,.. they always seem to grow legs. And this is not a letter of complaint, I don’t do that. But, I believe that you need to know these things in order to make the Rood experience a lot more user friendly.

I know that Michael has been gifted by Yahovah with tremendous insight into correctly discerning these end times. His teachings, like Y’shua’s, are different from all the others who claim to have ‘heard from God’. Both speak the TRUTH, and it’s the TRUTH that I have sought all my life. In ARoodAwakening, I know that I’ve found it. Please keep up your good work, in spite of all the persecution and disappointments. Do not allow yourself to become disheartened, but please, I pray, be uplifted, knowing that it’s people like me, real seekers of the TRUTH, who recognize the TRUTH when they hear it from their Master’s voice, for His sheep know their Shepherds voice. You are accomplishing a great work!

I’ll continue to do my little bit, Matthew, whenever I can, for as long as our Creator allows me to live and breathe. If I had more, I would surely give it to Him through you. Be encouraged my friend, and continue to fight the good fight, one day at a time. I look forward to the time when I might be of greater assistance to all of you.

Thanks for all that you do Matthew,
    and Shalom,

Thank you, Matthew for this encouragement. I truly needed this right now. I go tomorrow to speak with a guy about using his facilities to open a fellowship around Passover.

I too have felt unsure of myself im this as I dont even know if we will have any people interested in a regular fellowship in this area.

    Please pray for us.

    Todah Rabah!
